Coach Cotton, who can see Michael’s potential as a member of the football team, manages to persuade the school to let Michael attend. Although, Michael’s first weeks at the academy are not very promising, since Michael could hardly read, and was extremely introverted.
Michael’s life starts to look up when he runs into the adorable, outspoken, and very clever S.J. Tuohy (Played by Jae Head, who is so fantastic in this role he is sure to be the next Macaulay Culkin). S.J. Tuohy also happens to come from a wonderful family, with very kind hearts. On a rainy and cold night when Michael is walking in the cold towards the gym to spend the night, he is approached by Leigh Ann Touhy, (played with great passion by Sandra Bullock) Leigh Ann Touhy is a feisty woman, with a heart of gold. Upon seeing Michael predicament she convinces her family to let Michael stay for the night.
The Touhy’s do not only give Michael a place to stay, but they also give Michael a place in their hearts. They help Michael develop emotionaly by providing him with the love and security he had never received growing up in the ghetto. Michael is not only a considerate and grateful young man, but he is also a big brother to Jae Head. Jae Head helps Michael, by making it his job to coach Michael. Although, it is the advice given by Leigh Ann Touhy to Michael, that helps Michael become a great player. Leigh Ann even provides Michael with a tutor (Played by Kathy Bates) who’s only sin is that she’s a Democrat, she helps Michael understand his studies, and achieve the GPA needed to get a scholarship at almost any University of his choice.
Despite the challenges and different backgrounds, the Touhys decide to become Michael guardians, they treat him like a son, both J.S and Collins treat him like an older brother. They even buy Michael a truck. Mrs. Touhy shows Michael, what a compassionate woman she is when Michael has a car accident, and J.S. was with him. Instead of being angry with Michael she sees that thanks to Michael's protective instincts, and quick thinking, J.S. got out of the accident with minor injuries. She even comforts Michael after the accident, and shows him the true meaning of forgiveness. The Touhy’s make a difference in this man’s life, thanks to their love and support Michael becomes successful and a top NFL player.

I saw this film with my sister. It is a great film and I am not a sports advocate. But, you feel for the young man in the story, especially knowing it is true. What is sad...is during the filming of this movie, it is said Sandra Bullock was being blind sided by her husband cheating on her. Sad! But, yes the movie is now out on DVD and worth having.
